Don't Let the Hard Days Win!

After this last week it was more than a little ironic going to my mailbox and getting this shirt today (pic above).

I remember ordering it a while back, but just as quickly forgot about it in the thick of things…

Especially of recent, because my days got incrementally harder all of a sudden…

If You don’t have Your Health…

I rarely get sick and typically even when I do, I can muddle though. Even the couple times I got Covid, it didn’t hit me hard…

But, whatever industrial, military grade bug I got last week took me OUT for a solid week!

It was not good.

Luckily not quite hospitalized bad, but sick in bed, don’t leave the house, barely eat, have my instructors cover classes for over a week bad…

I’m not used to that mojo, I’ll tell ya.

Everything except for sleep, and bathroom duties, was on hold. No teaching, no emails, no phone calls, no visitors, no tv, no nothing for days…

I cancelled EVERYTHING and just laid there, sleeping 16+ hours per day for the good part of 5 days.

If I had been nauseous or had a sustained fever, I would have been forced to admit myself to urgent care.

Luckily, that wasn’t the case. Worst sustained headache, body aches, fatigue and brain fog I’ve ever experienced.

Yes, Yes, Yes…

I’ve turned the corner and am on the mend, but I’m not 100% quite yet… I’m still easing back into regular life.

I’m a pretty self sufficient guy, but I’m here to tell you that those folks who had my back I owe a huge debt of gratitude to.

There’s an old saying:

“If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far go together.”

I’ve struggled with that one my entire life.

I grew up with some severe trust issues and a good ol’ ‘do it yourself’ independent spirit.

As you can imagine is a double edged sword.

I’ve tried to quell the edgy nature of my shortcomings without losing the positive portions of my nature. Over the years I’ve made some huge headway, but still have a long road ahead.

Luckily I have some really, really good people around me who have supported me, even when I find myself getting dragged to that support kicking and screaming.

A Tip of the Hat…

Chris & Rob, a couple of my long time instructors at the academy, really stepped up for me taking over classes when I wasn’t able to (and still are). Much love and appreciation goes out to them for picking up my sickly slack.

All the students, family and friends who reached out with invitations for help and support… Much, much appreciation there as well.

And to my better half for her endearing nurturing nature. She always goes that extra mile, even when this old feral cat doesn’t want to come out from under the couch even to take handouts of food, love and affection. There’s a special place in my heart for you, even underneath all my mangey, road hardened fur and sometimes bristly tail.

So, What’s YOUR Lesson Here?!

If you have a good loving group of people around you who is there when your chips are down, make sure you tell ‘em how much you appreciate them and that they matter to you.

If you don’t…

Start building better relationships.

Some day, some time, you’re going to need them.

Things can change quickly. You’re health, your wealth, your station in life. You might not know when, but it’s going to happen.

The Two Most Important Parts Of Class…

I often say that the two most important parts of class (at our local academy) are at the beginning and the ending when look at each person in the the eye, shake everyone’s hand and thank them for being there. To connect personally, even for a moment.

Surround yourself with a crew of people who have your back… and reciprocate the best you can too.

Like Humphrey said:

“No matter where you are anyone in need has a friend.”

Thanks…

I’m grateful for you being in this community and your patience this past week. It’s a small amount of time really, but still important.

And your health and relationships are more important than you may know. I just had a small reminder to cherish both.

Now that I’m coming around you’ll be hearing more from me as I get caught up w/our business at hand.

Remember, don’t let the hard days win!

It’s easier when you have good people around you.

That’s a big part of cultivating this path.
